A point which many industrialists are unaware of, is that vaccum provides extremely high insulating strength, and has remarkable arc quenching characteristics which are even better than other mediums. This is the main reason why in majority of the circuit breakers, vaccum is used as an arc quenching source. The level of such a medium generally lies between 10^-7 to 10^-5 torr.

Although the technology created is appropriate for mostly average voltage applications, we would inform you that the advanced tech developed for handling higher electric flux vaccum is not commercially viable.

Principle of Vacuum Circuit Breaker

The following is an explanation of the arc present in the vaccum circuit breaker, along with it’s extinction-

When the link of the breaker is opened in the vaccum medium at (10^-7 to 10^-5 torr),  an arc is created between the contacts, with the help of the ionisation process of metal vapours of contacts. But, the curve is destroyed as soon as possible, simply because the electrons and ions developed by the metallic vapours cools down rapidly on the surface of the container, which thus provides a fast retrieval of electric strength.

Construction of Vacuum Circuit Breaker

The construction of the simple above mentioned mechanism is as follows-

  • The device supports a set contact, moving contact and a curve shield affixed inside a vaccum enclosure.
  • The mobile member is attached to a control system with the support of stainless steel bellows. This seals the chamber permanently so as to reduce any chances of leakages.
  • A glass/ceramic vessel is utilized as an insulating body for the exterior side.
  • The shield mentioned above forbid the worsening of the inner electric strength, which is maintained by preventing  metallic vapours from falling on the internal surface of the insulating screen.

Working of Vacuum Circuit Breaker

How does this mechanical system work? Well here it is?

  • When the beaker begins functioning, a moving structure segregates the affixed contact and the arc which is stuck between the contact. The curve is simply created due to the  ionisation process of metal ions.
  • The arc is destroyed as soon as possible, since the metallic vapours, electrons and ions developed are diffused within a short span of time, and are thus attracted by the overheads of both moving and fixed members and armours.
  • As vaccum recovers dielectric strength in an extremely rapid manner, the curve extinction occurs within the enclosed area, via a brief contact alteration (say 0.625 cm)
  • Mostly used in rural areas, such structures are employed in outdoor areas, and range from 22kV to 66kV.
